How do I get to The Colorado Academy of Music and Dance?
The Colorado Academy is located at 975 Garden of the Gods Rd. Ste. F. The academy is easily accessed from I-25. Exit Garden of the Gods and head West. Pass through the stoplight at Chestnut and head about one block further West. The academy will be located on the South (Left) side of the street, across the parking lot from Mollica's Italian Deli and four doors down from A Total New You Salon and Day Spa.
How much do classes/lessons cost? We offer a wide variety of classes and programs at The Colorado Academy of Music and Dance. Please contact us and we can send you more detailed information. We don't require any of our students to enter into long-term contract agreements and we do accept tuition payments by check/money order, credit card, or ACH withdrawal and can arrange for tuition payments to be made at any time during the month, which means we can find the tuition payment option that will work best for you.
Why does your facility make a difference in the quality of the instruction?
We are proud to offer our students and their families a clean, well-organized, professional facility and we believe this environment enhances a student's experience in music or dance classes. All of our dance floors are true sprung floors with professional "marlay" dance surfaces which are ideal for dancing, absorb impact, thereby reducing stress to the body, minimizing fatigue, and preventing injury. Our music rooms are large enough for an instructor and student to work in comfortably together while eliminating outside distractions. We have a large waiting area for parents that features free wireless Internet access, ample parking in a well-lit lot, and office staff available during all classes to assist parents.
Music Lessons
Why pay the extra money for private lessons when my child can take band or orchestra at school for free?
While the ensemble experience provided in a school setting is valuable and enjoyable for many students and gives young people an important introduction to their instrument, it's impossible for band and orchestra teachers to give students in an ensemble class the individual attention they will need to really excel with their instrument. Band and orchestra teachers are required to have a certain level of proficiency in each of the instruments in their respective ensembles, but few have the same amount of skill and experience with each instrument, which means that despite their best efforts, your child will probably not receive the best instruction for their particular instrument. Students begin music training with a wide variety of natural abilities and in the process have unique difficulties. Private instruction tailors lessons to your child's needs, allowing him or her to progress more quickly and reach a higher level of expertise.
Why take private lessons at an academy rather than having an instructor come into my home?
We are committed to providing our students with the highest quality music instruction. All of our music teachers are university trained, have extensive teaching experience and many perform professionally. Many teachers who teach from their homes, teach and practice music on a "part-time" basis. In addition, teaching and learning can take place with fewer distractions in our private music instruction rooms; no ringing phones, knocks at the door, or television in the next room. This allows students to focus on working with their instructor.
Can I sit in on my child's music lesson?
Yes. Unlike some music facilities, our large practice rooms can easily accommodate a parent who would like to sit in on a music lesson and you may do so whenever you like. Students respond differently to this and we recommend you work with your child's instructor to determine if sitting in motivates or distracts your child.
How old does my child have to be to begin music lessons?
This varies by instrument. Instruments are shaped and weighted differently which means a child will need to be at least a certain size to be able to hold and manipulate certain instruments. We work closely with our instructors to determine appropriate ages to begin training. Please contact us for more information.
Do you offer only "classical music" training?
No. While we do offer plenty of classical music instruction, many of our teachers offer instruction in jazz, improvisation, composition, pop, etc. Another benefit of private lessons is that instruction can be tailored to the interests of the student, helping maintain enthusiasm.
Dance Classes
Why does the type of dance floor used make a difference? All of
the dance floors at the Colorado Academy of Music and Dance are true sprung floors
with professional "marley" dance surfaces. Sprung dance floors cushion impact, protecting
muscles, joints, and bones from the rigors of dance training. The sprung floor also
reduces fatigue, allowing dancers to dance longer. The "marley" surface is a professional
used by most professional dance companies. It provides additional cushioning and
gives the appropriate amount of grip to protect dancers from unnecessary slips and
falls. Working on a dance floor laid directly on a concrete sub floor, or an inappropriate
surface leaves dancers open to impact injuries, falls and increased fatigue.
