Breakdancing was originally developed during the early 1970's along with other
elements of the hip hop culture in New York City. This distinctive dance style became
an alternative to much of the street violence present in the gang culture of these
communities. Today, breakdancing literally transcends all races, ages, and demographics.
At the Colorado Academy of Music and Dance we strive to help this culture develop
and continue to create great community.

The term "breakdancing" itself refers to the style of music often accompanying the
dance form. The "breaks" in the music allow for the emphasis of the athletic and
acrobatic movements.
Breakdancing, and the hip hop culture in general, originally developed in poorer
communities as a response to the harsh lifestyle present there. Because of this
there was a stigma attached to much of it. Today, however, it is becoming recognized
as a tool to combat many of the negative details present in underprivileged communities.
Breakdancing can provide a positive alternative to much of the violence present
around us today. From the very beginning of its development breakdancers, or b-boys,
would "battle" each other as individuals or crews (groups) using their acrobatic
skill, mock fighting movements, and attitude to try to outdue the others. Disputes
could be handled this way without as much risk of violence or injury. The athletic
demand of the art form is a constructive way to blow off steam, and maintain a healthy
lifestyle full of exercise.
We are proud to say that the breakdance culture in Colorado Springs is alive and
well. We are excited to see so many different types of people working together to
learn more about this great dance form. We hope to see you in class soon!
